Broadcast from the cloud – endless horizons or all hot air?

The inaugural Technology Pathfinders forum
24th of May at 5-6.30pm, followed by networking drinks
at One Alfred Place

Cloud and virtualised solutions for media management, playout and distribution have been hailed as the future of broadcasting. New cloud-based solutions are challenging traditional, hardware-based approaches, promising cost savings, increased speed to market and unsurpassed flexibility. To date, many broadcasters have been reluctant to commit, citing security and resilience concerns – however, this may be about to change. A growing number of smaller broadcasters and new channels have adopted the cloud, often with positive results, and many major broadcasters are now planning to transition to fully cloud-based control and playout systems over the coming years.

What’s the real state of cloud-based TV today? What are the real benefits of cloud-based solutions – and are they available to all broadcasters? Can the risks of migrating to the cloud be mitigated and managed? Will cloud-based media management, playout and distribution become the norm for broadcasters over the next five years? How will the incumbent playout providers respond? How will the transition to the cloud impact broadcaster operating models and the wider competitive environment?

The Technology Pathfinders Forum is a new networking group for broadcast executives interested in exploring innovations and future trends in operations and technology. The Forum is an invite-only event, intended to support the exchange of ideas and experiences and to enable business collaboration.
